Spokane nonprofits may seek a share of $40 million provided to the city and county for local homelessness programs. City spokesperson Erin Hut said Spokane’s role is to distribute the funding through community organizations that directly provide housing and shelter services.

The money could support eviction prevention, additional shelter beds and other efforts connecting people with resources and greater stability. For Spokane renters, families and neighborhoods, those uses could help people remain housed or find indoor shelter. If an award is not fully used, the city can reclaim the remaining money and redirect it to an effective program.

Jewels Helping Hands is among the nonprofits interested in the opportunity as winter approaches. Director Julie Garcia said an award would help pay for emergency services. Her organization runs a center offering job coaching and financial aid, while also serving as a shelter through 7 p.m.

The county’s neighborly portal is accepting applications. Submissions are due January 8. Funding decisions and contract negotiations are scheduled for July.
