RANGE to Launch Spokane WhatsApp News Channel
The channel will serve Spanish-speaking residents with local news, resources and important area decisions.
RANGE has started El Alcance, a WhatsApp news channel for Spanish-speaking residents in Spokane and nearby communities. Its purpose is to make local news available in Spanish while also sharing information about community resources and significant decisions or events in the area.
The channel’s focus was shaped partly through a listening session held with Mujeres in Action. RANGE plans to cover local politics, immigration news and how those issues affect local communities, along with resources residents may need. The newsroom also wants suggestions about what information would be most useful.
Election coverage will come first because the election is one week away. Posts will include Spanish-language information about school taxes, ballot measures and other parts of the election process. The channel is intended to give Spanish-speaking residents another way to follow decisions that can affect families, schools and communities around Spokane.
Residents can follow El Alcance through WhatsApp. RANGE also provided a WhatsApp number, (509)-701-2036, for messages, questions and suggestions.
