Cheney strengthened its playoff push with a 54-13 victory over Shadle Park in Thursday’s GSL 3A matchup at ONE Spokane Stadium. Lightning delayed kickoff by 25 minutes, and steady rain continued throughout the game. The Blackhawks built a 39-13 halftime advantage before triggering a running clock in the third quarter.

Connor Collins completed 16 of 17 passes for 224 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Nearly all his throws came before halftime. Ty McKinzie gained 163 yards on eight carries and scored three rushing touchdowns. Blake Kernan added six receptions for 151 yards and two scores. Cheney also returned a tipped pass 50 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter.

Shadle Park freshman Will Tobin finished 18 of 34 for 224 yards and scored on a run. Titus Rucker recorded 98 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries, plus eight catches for 66 yards. Cheney improved to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in league play, remaining one game behind Ridgeline with one game left. The GSL 3A’s first two finishers advance automatically to the Week 10 Round of 32. The third-place team instead meets the Mid-Columbia Conference’s third-place finisher in a Nov. 3 play-in. Ridgeline faces Gonzaga Prep in a nonleague game Friday, while Mt. Spokane hosts Central Valley in league play.
